This is the second book in the Michael Bennett series.

in the middle of a hostage negotiation as he struggles to resolve the situation before it goes tactical, that is, to SWAT to resolve.

Shortly thereafter we're thrust into the machinations of a mysterious character who seems to have a hatred for many inhabitants of New York, the rude, the self involved, the selfish - shortly therein he commences a plan, a plan of killing said people. Initially it seems random but as Bennett investigates the motivations and meaning behind the killings becomes more clear.

All the while Bennett has his ten kids we met in the prior novel, only this time round rather than introductions we find they've been struck down with a 'flu that's passing around the city, enter ten projectile vomiting children. ( Having 5 children of myself, i wanted to laugh and cry at this part of the story) As a parent we all know how it feels to be up to our ears in vomit from the flu.... not a fun time especially when you are trying to catch a killer.

Well I guess you could say i am on a Karen McManus kick this year....... but what can i say...when you find something you like...why change it....

I was super excited to read the second book in this series!

Bayview is one messed up place. I will just state the obvious right here and now. You would think that after the events of "One of Us is Lying" and the death of Simon......there would be more active security measures, the blocking of chats, etc. But instead, we get the worst game of Truth or Dare.

I honestly couldnt wait for the next text to see who was next, what secret was going to be unleashed... I thought i knew who it was then i was wrong...... i was literally spinning trying to figure out who the new "simon" was.

I honestly enjoyed the relationship that grew between Maeve and Luis Santos . It was cute and gave you just enough to still want to know and read more.

Every chapter leaves you with a cliff hanger and you it just leaves you hungry for more.

Of course I had to read another one from the Queen Karen McManus.

This one is by far my favorite. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and was always so sad when i had to put it down.

This book alternates between the past and present, as well as between several POVs. Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah Story are cousins. They hardly know each other, but they're united by family mysteries and drama. Twenty-four years ago, wealthy Mildred Story shocked everyone by suddenly disinheriting all four of her children. The only explanation she gave was a letter sent through her lawyer that said "You know what you did." Mildred has refused to have any contact with her children since then, and she's certainly never contacted her grandchildren.

Until now. Out of the blue, Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah have been invited to spend the summer working at one of Mildred's properties, the Gull Cove Resort. None of them particularly want to go there, but their parents, hopeful that Mildred might be softening in her old age, don't give them much of a choice.

The Story family has more secrets than any of the cousins ever realized, and Gull Cove Resort is going to give them an opportunity to find them all out.

To be honest i wasnt a big fan of the character Jonah
This book caught my attention because i live around the Amish community. A book about murder, rape, mystery, amish.... sign me up.

This book is about an ex amish girl name Kate Burkholder. She is now the police chief in Painters Mill, OH. She makes a great chief since there is a big Amish community and she speaks Pennsylvanian Dutch. Sixteen years ago,a series of murder shattered the peaceful farming community. Kate survived the Slaughterhouse killer.

She now has as to stop a vicious killer in this book that may be a copycat or a killer that murdered several women 16 years ago. However, she has personal reasons for believing that it has to be another killer. It doesn't get easier for her when her role as police chief is getting questioned as more people are killed while she is trying to figure out who the killer is. Some local people just don't think she is trying hard enough.

I really enjoyed this book and couldnt put it down. I cant wait to plow through the rest of the books in this series.

Again another stand alone from the queen Ms. McManus. I really have been enjoying her books.

A stupid mistake may have cost Brynn the future in journalism that she'd planned. In an effort to make up for it, she's become an intern with Motive, a true-crime show. She's hopeful that they'll use her idea for a show, investigating the murder of Mr. Larkin, her favorite teacher at Saint Ambrose.

Four years ago, three Saint Ambrose students, Tripp, Charlotte, and Shane, found Mr. Larkin's body in the woods behind their school. Around the time of the murder, Mr. Larkin was looking into the theft of some money. After his death, the envelope of money was discovered in Charlotte's locker. The fingerprints of Shane, the boy Charlotte had a huge crush on, were found on the rock that killed Mr. Larkin. Things weren't looking good for them, especially Shane, except Tripp's account of events matched theirs. Tripp wasn't a friend of the two other kids at the time, so what motive would he have had to lie?

Brynn is convinced that there's more to the story than the three of them ever shared, and now that she's back at Saint Ambrose she's determined to find out the truth.

I couldn't put this book down and had my headphones in the whole time i was cleaning my house and making dinner.

So good!
I read this book because I loved One of Us is Lying and also love love love Karen McManus.

* I am a little upset this is a standalone..... Like honestly how is this a standalone... I wanted more..

Ivy, Mateo, and Cal used to be close friends due to the Greatest Day Ever, a time when they all skipped school together and had an amazing day. They've since drifted apart, and they're now all in high school and mostly hang out with different people. But the Greatest Day Ever still ties them together, so when Ivy is faced with coming to school after a humiliating senior-year class president election loss to Brian "Boney" Mahoney, she easily agrees when Cal suggests that the three of them skip school together like old times.

Unfortunately, the Greatest Day Ever isn't exactly something that can easily be replicated. Things go from vaguely disappointing to horrible when the three of them spot Boney (who should be at school, delivering his acceptance speech), follow him into an abandoned building, and then discover his body. For various reasons, none of them want to be around when the police arrive, but the end result is that Ivy becomes the prime suspect in Boney's murder. Finding out what really happened will involve digging into all of their secrets and getting to know the people they've become since they drifted apart.

Step On A Crack was my first book in the Michael Bennett series, and I found it quite engaging. A detective with the NYPD, Michael is caught up in a horrendous hostage situation while struggling to support his dying wife, Maeve, and take care of his ten children. The plot and the characters were complicated and exciting.

I was not really a fan of the ending

Gaming The System Series
Brenna Aubrey
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Description book 1:

“This is one of 13 romance novels that should be on every woman’s bucket list.”–Bustle.com

I had the craziest idea when I decided to auction my virginity online. I have reasons for it. Good reasons. My mom’s hospital bills, for one. My medical school tuition, for another. By day, I’m a student and popular gaming blogger, but my dream is to become a doctor. This auction could free me from a crushing pile of debt and give me the cash I need to make my dreams a reality.

And honestly, I’m also looking forward to cashing in that troublesome V-card. Win, win.

My rules are set in stone: One night, then no further contact with the auction winner. Enter Adam Drake, the brilliant gaming company CEO and multimillionaire. He won my auction. He’s young, driven, and so damn sexy. It’s frightening how attracted I am – though I’d never admit it. And it’s clear I’ll need to protect my heart.

But Adam is used to making the rules and before I can catch it, he’s found a loophole. Every stipulation I made to protect myself is getting tossed by the wayside.
I can’t help but wonder… Is he playing me? Or is he playing for keeps?

As a teen, she witnessed the brutal slaughter of dolphins, and as an adult, she decides to do something about it. She leaves her home in Los Angeles and travels to Japan to speak out for them, but little does she know that she is embarking on an adventure that will change her life forever. From the urban metropolis of Tokyo to the historic Kyoto to the culinary city of Osaka, and the seaside town of Taiji, Tessa is determined to help Japanese activists stand up for her beloved mammals.

Along the way, the friendships and bonds that she builds with people in Japan, and the unconditional love of a stranger named Toshiro, open her eyes to a complicated society of conventions and traditions. Yet, her limited knowledge of the language and customs doesn't deter her from taking on a dangerous mission that could land her in jail.

Book Links:
Goodreads * Amazon.in * Amazon.com

Read an Excerpt from The American Outsider

At the Japanese garden, Tessa watched butterflies drink the nectar of flowers. She fed the fish in the koi pond and stood on a bridge to take several shots of the picturesque scenery. Less shaken, she headed to the French garden she had heard so much about and began sauntering down a sycamore-lined path. She sat on a bench and pulled out her beautifully wrapped bento box, chopsticks, and jasmine tea. Inside, the box cradled an artistically arranged mini-feast of multigrain rice, white rice, marinated tofu, and colorful vegetables. It almost looked much too pretty to eat. As she enjoyed her meal and drank her fragrant tea, Tessa took in her surroundings. A mother pushed a toddler in a stroller and carried her younger child in a strap wrapped around her. An elderly man sat at a bench and sketched the landscape. Two trendy-looking girls wearing miniskirts and hats chatted and sniggered. A group of middle-aged women used fanciful umbrellas to keep the sun from aging their flawless complexions. Showing off one’s legs by wearing miniskirts was common in Japan, but showing one’s shoulders and cleavage was taboo. Wearing hats and using umbrellas was favored because having a fair complexion was important and desirable for many Japanese women. Tessa, on the other hand, loved the sun and a good tan. Funny, how everyone’s perspective is so different, she thought. When she finished eating, Tessa placed her trash in a plastic bag and put it in her handbag. In Japan, it was rare to see public trash cans. People carried around small plastic bags to put their trash in until they could discard it at home. To outsiders, Japan’s trash etiquette is complex and one of the reasons why landlords do not like to rent apartments to foreigners.

Homa Pourasgari spent hours in her father’s home office, writing, reading and letting her imagination carry her to unseen worlds.
Then Came You
Dylan Allen
Publication date: February 23rd 2023
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Most people dream of falling in love.
But all I know of love is that it turns smart people into fools.
So, I don’t dream, I work.
And put distance between myself and the stain my father’s betrayal left on my family.

When I land a high powered job in London,
It feels like I finally have everything I want.

Then comes Simon, the gorgeous architect with a filthy mouth
who sets my body and my mind on fire.
I surrender to the pull of attraction and the promise of pleasure in his heated gaze.
But those smoldering dark eyes of his are also full of secrets.

Playing with that kind of fire is a fool’s game. And I am no fool.

So, when our night together ends on less than happy terms, I’m sure it’s for the best.

When a work project brings us back together,
I’m determined to keep Simon where he belongs – in my rearview.

Fate, however, has a different plan.

Simon breaks down my walls one sexy, wicked smile at a time.
And I discover that behind his brooding, secretive facade, lies a heart of pure gold.
Soon, all I do is dream…of his touch, his kisses,
and of a love good enough and strong enough to last forever.

But I’ve got secrets of my own.
And when they rear their heads,
nothing will be the same again.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Thank you netgalley and the publisher for providing me the audio version of this story for an honest review.

I honestly really enjoyed this book. It was a very good thriller/mystery/suspense novel. There were a couple times throughout the story that I thought I had figured out and then BAM curveball...and i was like... damn... well i was wrong... and THAT. ENDING. did not see that coming!

This story is told between to views, Lori and her daughter Jess.

Lori was killed when Jess was just a baby when she was out for a walk. They never found Lori's killer. Now years later Jess wants answers. A strange man confronts jess about her mother. Now after all these years Jess is on a search for answers...

what she finds out is that her whole family has secrets and lies and one by one each secret and lie gets reveled until the end when jess finally finds out who kills her mother.

There are many twists and turns through out this book that you will not be disappointed. I gave it 4 stars because it felt like it was missing something.... granted the book was a page turner, but it was not something that I HAD to sit and read in one night page turner.

It is definitely worth your time you will not be disappointed!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Joanne Lee digging an eighteen-inch deep hole, with her bare hands, in the family grave in order to bury the body of a baby girl which she and her sister Cath had discovered stuffed into a red bin in her mother’s wardrobe. Bernadette, having concealed her pregnancy, claimed that the child had been stillborn and that she hadn’t known what to do. Joanne felt torn: having recently buried her own baby son she knew that her dead sister had a right to a proper funeral, yet she knew her mother would get into trouble for concealing the death and wanted to protect her. So, even though she knew it was wrong, she reluctantly suggested this illegal interment in the family grave. It wouldn’t be until 2008 that she would discover that Bernadette had also kept the remains of three more dead babies, born between 1986 and 1997: one was discovered in the same red bin and the other two in a canvas holdall. What the family had seen as the effects of Bernadette’s yo-yo dieting over the years had, in fact, been concealed pregnancies. With her mother initially denying all knowledge of the bodies, Joanne was arrested on suspicion of murder but, once the facts emerged, her mother eventually stood trial. However, because forensic examinations were unable to determine whether any of the babies had been born alive, she was charged only with the concealment of their births and deaths.
The background to these horrors is exposed through Joanne Lee’s account of her childhood experiences growing up in almost unimaginable squalor in a dysfunctional, filthy, chaotic home, seeing and experiencing things no young child should ever be exposed to. When the police searched the house in 2008, they discovered animal faeces scattered around the place, swarms of maggots, bin bags piled up from the floor to the ceiling, and even stinking, years-old nappies matted into the carpet. To describe her mother as inadequate is a huge understatement. Although she wasn’t physically abusive, she showed absolutely no interest in her daughter, leaving her to fend for herself from a very young age.
A sad story but so good that you wont want to stop reading.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review
Jenny holds secrets about the last night she saw her best friend tightly, unsure whether to tell anyone. Chloe's last few months were torture for reasons mostly beyond her control. When another girl, Helen, who lives on a nearby reservation, is found murdered on a remote trail, it isn't long before Jenny starts wondering why this girl isn't getting anywhere near the attention from local police as Chloe's disappearance is. When Jenny realizes brooding Tom, a senior at school, is willing to help investigate and might have a romantic interest in her, it leads to a number of events, some dangerous, others painful, but the most important ones opening her eyes to the frailty of those around her.
A very good young adult thriller that covers tough subjects such as bullying, sexual assault, racism and suicide. I really enjoyed this book.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Two girls disappeared and the cops are not finding any leads to whom took them. So, the family contacts Alice Vega to find them. Vega is very good at finding missing people and with the help of a local formal cop are they starting to dig deeper into the people around the two girls.
I loved this book from start to finish and could not put the book down. When the truth is revealed and its really dark and disturbing is what I was looking for. I truly can not believe the things people do but love the disturbed truth of it all.
I am a true fan o the author and will be reading more from her!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
I have a big soft spot for any story that has a k-9 unit has a man character. My husband was a K-9 Handler and it always is a yes for me.
This book was more of a thriller book and centers around a dog trainers by not just an dobedience trainer but a cadaver dog specialist. This book centers around Mace Reid who just lost his dog and recently got divorced. He gets a new dog and is staring to train her. During training this new dog a serial killer begins targeting women in the area. He must use the new dog to try to trail this crazy cruel killer.
I trulely loved everything about this book and will be ready more from the author.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
Despite promising an exciting mystery, "All the Pretty Things" never delivered. When I discovered that the was set in an amusement park, I was excited, expecting a dark, nail-biting mystery. Instead I got Ivy, a rather boring protagonist walking around talking to people and along the way discovering some disturbing family secrets.
Ivy worked at her father’s amusement park and a coworker, Ethan, mysteriously dies after work one night. Ivy is unsettled by Ethan’s death and the reaction her best friend Morgan had shortly after Ethan’s death. Ivy starts an investigation and finds out the truth about Ethan’s death and Morgan’s mental health crisis
The cover was very beautiful and caught my eye, and again one of the reasons why I requested the book. Sadly the book just didn’t deliver. It felt like it was missing something. I was hoping for some crazy, exciting, thrilling plot twist, but sadly nothing.
Over was a decent book and would rate it a solid 3 stars.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in an exchange for an honest review.
I would like to note that I did not read the other books in the series and read this book like a stand alone.
Homicide detective Valerie Hart is back with another tale filled with dead bodies, twists and an ending I did not expect. Homicide Detective Valerie Hart investigates the brutal murder of Adam Grant, a San Francisco prosecutor, and the attempted murder of his wife, during a home invasion. Because of the victim’s profession, an ex-con is a suspected and the search is on for him and a woman known to him. This book was a little hard to get through but defiantly well-worth the time.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review
This is a middle grade book based on a girl who lives at the zoo. Why she lives at the zoo you ask? She was whisked there due to a tornado when she was a toddler. She was cared for by an elephant. No one came forward to claim Lexington so she has grown up at the zoo. Her Best friend also lives at the zoo an dis the product of a mixed marriage and a Thai mother. Her best friend’s mother homeschools her. Lex meets a friendly ghost, who insists she is a misplaced spirit, who encourages her to look for a hidden treasure. A story of love, friendship, legacy, and belonging, that once again makes the important point that one's family is not always by lineage.

I would like to add the cover of the book drew me to wanted to read this book. I am a super judging book cover person (insert eye roll here) haha.

I was provided a copy of this book from the publisher via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Man this book hits you right at the beginning ( I Like that). This book is geared to young adults probably middle school aged. This is his first book in the series. Jarli invents a truth app that allows people to know if someone near them is telling the truth or not. Is knowing the truth always a good thing? Things don’t go to well with the app and things go south. Hence all the action. There where a lot of words crammed into paragraphs that might make reading certain parts difficult. I fount myself re reading some paragraphs to full understand what was going on.
This book does not disappoint and wanting me to read the next book.
I would recommend my children and their friends to read.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I was really intrigued to learn more about what goes into dog food. My Husband is a K-9 handler and the sheriff for our county and I always wondered why he was so obessed with what the dog was eating. Now I understand.

I am so shocked and horrified and ashamed that America has no really up its standards with how and what dog food is made. It should be high quality like the food we eat.

You can clearly see the author’s mission in educating everyone in kibble making and trying to get everyone to understand what a broken system it may be.
There was a lot of repetitive information in a bunch of sections but I enjoyed the book.
This has made me look at my pets food more closing and feel bad for what I was feeding my animals before.

I received a review copy from the publisher via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

I read this story with my 8 year old, 4, and 2 year old. Even though its a children book I would say older kids like 8+.

It was more of an informative book about different Halloween monsters , i.e. Frankenstein, mummies werewolves etc. It was cute and had a lot of facts. My younger kids lost interest right away but my 8 year old was interested and thought it was "neat"

I think older children would enjoy this around Halloween time.

I'm given this book a 3.5 just because it felt more like a school book then a story\ bedtime story to read to my kids.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher in an exchange for an honest review.

I first discovered Melinda Woodhall through Book Siren, when I read River Girls. I enjoyed the story and was happy to receive a copy of the second book, Girl Eight, for review.

Ms. Woodall delivers a page-turning story, super suspenseful, and a great mystery that will keep you guessing for most of the story.

A young woman has gone missing, and it is clear from the beginning who has abducted her but who is helping is the real question. The abductor and the accomplice have been working together for a decade, kidnapping girls whose disappearances will not draw much attention.

At Mercy Harbor, Eden Winthrop has added drug treatment programs to her curriculum, wanting to expand the help available to vulnerable young women. After Eden finds one of the vulnerable girls in her room apparently suffering a suspected overdose; she goes to see her in the hospital only to find the girl's missing. Eden knows there's something wrong so she turns to Detective Nessa Ainsley for help.

Leo Steele whilst working to earn Eden’s trust and win her heart, is also determined to find his mother's real killer and clear his father's name.
